Designing Apple Help

The Help Viewer in the forthcoming Mac OS X 10.2 ("Jaguar") has been completely re-engineered. But it is descended from the Help Viewer introduced in 1998, with Mac OS 8.5. Kevin Knabe was a member of the team that designed Apple Help for its debut, and in this article he cogently discusses the design goals, background, and philosophy.
