Instructional designers are increasingly asked to supplement the written word with animation or video-based tutorials. It's only fairly recently that these options became viable, so much of our documentation is traditionally entrenched in the written word.
But about 80 years ago, Western Electric released an 11 minute animation that demonstrated and explained their new innovation; synchronized audio and video. View Finding His Voice on YouTube.
As today's writers continue to come to grasp with "new" media, learning from the past can be worthwhile. In this video, the instructional content begins about 4 minutes into the film.
