Although the field of technical writing is dominated, in terms of voice, by those of us in high-tech, in reality its a very diverse field. One of the many sub-specialities is the writing of game rules and strategy instructions. The blog post The Wireless: The First Open-source Board Game gives a little peek into the challenges writers must face, by way of a very nice minimalist example. Like software, games are largely free-form within the constraints of certain rules or procedures. Can software writers learn from techniques of game documentation?
