HelpML revisited
Just over a year ago I mentioned an emerging standard markup language for help systems called HelpML. Recently I came across it again and it seems that development has stalled. But there are two interesting-looking HelpML viewers that might interest you and both will allow you try out the few example implementations.
LifeSaver is a cleanly designed viewer for use with Mac OS X. The application iHelp is a Windows-based viewer. Both seem to mimic the appearance of each platform's built-in help mechanisms, so you'll feel right at home when using them.
