A solid collection of writing reference books is essential, especially for solo practitioners who can't easily tap a colleague on the shoulder and ask for advice. A recent thread on TECHWR-L highlighted a couple of excellent lists: Jean Weber's Books for Technical Writers and Editors and Docsymmetry's Books for Technical Writers.
