In The eBook Triangle, Dorothea Salo urges electronic book authors to consider three aspects of their publication -- Appearance, Behavior, and Identity.
It's a good article for seeding some "beyond the book" thinking. Each aspect provides opportunities beyond that of printed media, if embraced: "Production experts roll their eyes when presented with impossible demands or forced to use a print convention that makes no sense in an eBook."
